Eggs
Basilisks cover their eggs in a special fluid they secrete that protects them from outside harm.
This slime can be burned off with fire to reveal a truly beautiful object;
You place the basilisk egg into the hot coals and the slimy coating around it begins to dry and flake away, revealing a lovely, light blue shell underneath.
